Today's New York Times has a travel piece about visiting Philly to "promenade" along Boat House Row. Heavy on the Kellys, the Dad Vails, and talk of a "gingerbread fairyland." Also includes a solid nod to Manayunk, and this year's bike race, though isn't it time to move beyond Le Bus? Can we get a shoutout for Couch Tomato or something?
Perched on hills farther upriver, past the rowing course itself, are regentrified neighborhoods. One of them, Manayunk, has more than 50 boutiques and 30 restaurants that invite a leisurely stroll. A
professional bicycle race, scheduled this year for June 8, courses through the nearby streets annually, with cyclists conquering “the Wall,” a stretch of Levering Street in Manayunk that seems to go straight up. [NYT]
Forget the leisurely stroll, let's talk about the Midnight Downhill. It's almost that time of year again -- will any couches make the slalom this year, or is the Red Bull Soapbox Race, schedule for Sept. 6, the only corporate-approved fun? From the MDC:
Red Bull will be hosting a community meeting to introduce their
proposed Soapbox race on The Wall, September 6, 2008.
