Yesterday I told you about the non-plans for the year's best non-official, non-organized Manayunk event, the Midnight Downhill. Well, faster than you can say "They have to ruin everything" comes word that "they" -- meaning, the Manayunk Development Corp. -- are quietly trying to kill this beloved event. Indeed, we hear Preston and Steve have been asked NOT to show up this year, which frankly is fine with us, but most disturbing is the news that the MDC may actually try to "legitimize" (translate: find sponsors for and find a way for someone to make money on) the Midnight Downhill.
You may recall that in 11 years, there have been no major incidents at this event, no tales of property damage, injuries, arrests, etc. In fact the only time we've heard of things getting even marginally ugly is last year when the Fifth District cops tried to stop the whole thing. It's harmless neighborhood fun, which means it's not a moneymaking scheme or meant to cater to suburban tourists. Which means "they" will kill it.
Speaking of lame ideas, we also hear there may be a plan afoot to bring back the Main Street Stroll, because nothing says hip and edgy like folks wandering around in Victorian costume! *rolls eyes* Can we just have our Canal Day back instead?
