Let's talk about Mike Weinreb for a second. Author, journalist, fellow college newspaper dork, friend of Klosterman. I mean, for most people that'd be enough cool for one guy -- but no, he's also a Fan of the Dan. So, obviously a quality individual and possibly the best sportswriter in America not actually working as a sportswriter.
Anyway, Weeeeenreb's got a new book coming out in March, and I can already see it being made into a movie, a low-key creeper like "Akeelah and the Bee." It's called "The Kings of New York: A Year Among the Geeks, Oddballs, and Geniuses Who Make Up America's Top High School Chess Team."
Holy cripes, "geeks, oddballs and geniuses." Are we sure this isn't about the Collegian newsroom?
It doesn't drop until March, but here's the Amazon listing. While you're there, check out his last book, 2004's Girl Boy Etc., which pretty much created the "lad lit" genre (a fact of which I am sure he loves to be reminded). For the love of God, someone please write a screenplay, hire Marc Feurstein (who has the same blue-eyed nice Jewish boy look, but isn't as cute) and make a few million dollars so dude can go off and write his Great American Novel.
